The Alchemy of Adaptation

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (Sweat, Ruined) and Booker Prize-winning novelist Marlon James (A Brief History of Seven Killings, Moon Witch, Spider King) explore the magic and mechanics of transforming literature for performance. How does a novelist’s voice become an actor’s body? When do words yield to images? Drawing from James’s experiences of writing for TV (Get Millie Black) and Nottage for film, they’ll discuss collaboration as creative metamorphosis—where fidelity matters less than essence. A masterclass in letting stories breathe new life across forms. The conversation is moderated by Joey Stocks, Director of Publications and Editor of The Dramatist from August 2011 through September 2023
