Francis Cape: Utopian Benches
Francis Cape’s “extraordinary gathering of faith-based furniture” (Roberta Smith, The New York Times) - meticulous copies of benches built and used in communal societies in North America from the 18th-century to the present - have been extensively shown across the United States, and is currently in exhibition at Catskill Art Space in Livingston Manor. The project is also the subject of a handsome book, We Sit Together: Utopian Benches from the Shakers to the Separatists of Zoar (Princeton Architectural Press). Cape joins Deep Water Literary Fest to discuss his exploration of “communalism as both a historic and contemporary alternative to individualism.” Drawings and photos of Cape’s benches will be on display.
Presented in association with the DVAA and Radio Catskill.
